Reading an article this morning about knitting in World War II, got me on an image search and profound history of knitting together-ness in the world. I found some interesting facts and fun posters to share with you. Ready? Here we go!
Did you know that sharing knitting patterns abroad was banned? Patterns could be used to communicate enemy secrets, of course! (Some of the patterns I work with nowadays feel like they're codes from WWII! Knitting lace, anyone?)
An instance of this was found when Belgian women who could see the trains out their windows would reflect the comings and goings in their knit work: purl one means this, dropped stitch means that.
Of course there was lots of knitting on the home front and women were encouraged and inspired to knit for the soldiers as well as American allies who were war torn and in need of clothing. They also used knitting shawls and blankets in the chilly dank places of bomb shelters. Life magazine ran an issue in November 24, 1941 the spread the word and featured knitting and articles teaching women how to knit. Can you imagine that headline today? Would be nice to see it revisited- without a world war!
And after Pearl Harbor? .....Purl Harder!
And bring your knitting to the Bomb shelter, too! Judy Weightman has a great blog post about this same topic and shows the following picture with the caption:
"Sheltering from the Blitz, October 5, 1940
Women, girls and babies (lying on the shelf) wait in an air raid shelter run by the Salvation Army in Clapton, east London."
So, it may not take a war for us to pick up our needles, but it is pretty amazing to see an entire world effort put into knitting for each other, soldier's need socks, gloves, hats. The women and children need clothes, shawls, blankets. What an amazing time to be living in and take part in a truly global knitting community.
